Jill Matthews

Jill Matthews studied fine art at The University of Vermont, graduating with a B.S. in Art Education and the University of California San Diego. A few years ago, Jill moved from California and settled in Southern Maine where the eastern seashore became her muse.

“My work centers on landscape as an emotional space rather than a literal one. The landscapes I return to most often are found in Maine-places that feel quiet, uninhabited, and suspended in time. I approach each painting as an editor, removing elements to quiet the composition and eliminate distraction. What remains-fog, softened horizons, simplified forms-becomes more powerful through restraint. These pared-down landscapes are meant to feel still and expansive, offering a sense of calm and quiet presence." Jill Matthews
