The Wooden Bowl is a new sculpture and represents a slight departure from my most recent body of work. The bowl is carved from a cherry burl and the pedestal is carved from a block of pine. To create both forms, I used gouges, hand planes, draw knives, and chain saws. While the majority of my recent work incorporates curves, and uses curved forms to suggest bulging volumes and linear movement, I am also interested in elements of contrast. Organic, natural, delicate and smooth are the elements I wanted to capture in the bowl while sturdy, solid, and geometric are the feelings I tried to communicate through carving the pedestal.
