Katie Bell is a direct carver, meaning she begins carving a piece with no idea at all. Bell starts to carve and carve, then eventually something comes. Through the process, she may change course, then trust and keep carving. A sort of "follow your nose" or better, "follow the stone" system.
Bell’s maestro José de Creeft opened her eyes and heart to the direct carving method in 1974 at The Art Students League in New York City. It still brings her happiness, 37 years later.
Drawing and painting are Bell’s quiet and dustless pleasures. The human figure and animals often find a place in her work. She carves various stones including limestone, marble, alabaster, and sandstone.
